Hey Guys! My visit to Nainital was a memorable one. I have lived every moment of it. This trip to Uttarakhand was my first visit to the state of hills and mountains. In my last Blog, I have already given a detailed description of the Naina Devi Temple. And, would like to say that this trip of mine was a very religious one, unlike my previous weekend getaways. I would like to share another experience of mine at the pious Purnagiri Devi Temple – Tanakpur. I am sure not a lot of you know about it. But I must this is a must go place in Uttarakhand.
After our visit to Nainital, we were back to the city Rudrapur and a took a halt. Already said that we had our relatives at Rudrapur, they suggested us to make a visit to Mata Purnagiri Devi Temple for sure. So, for the next day, we decided to visit this pious Temple and enjoy the drive from Rudrapur city to Purnagiri Devi Temple.
History of Purnagiri Devi Temple: This temple is also known as Punyagiri temple ( meaning the mountains of good deeds). As per an older legend, in the time of Satya Yuga Daksha Prajapati prepared a sacrificial ceremonial. For which he called except Lord Shiva because Daksha was angry for his daughter Sati wedded the “Yogi” God Shiva against his wishes. She was not invited in the Yagna. In spite of which, she joined the Yagna. Where Daksha insulted her husband Lord Shiva. Sati couldn’t bear it she jumped into the Yagna fire. Sati’s husband carried her dead body. And the places were the parts of her body dropped down were called as Shakti Peeth. The Shakti Peeth holds the prime position among Malikagiri, Kalikagiri, and Himawari Peeths.
“In the months of Navratri, in the Chaitra month of the Indian calendar, devotes in large number come here to have their wishes fulfilled.”
The anger of Lord Shiva was beyond control, shiva damaged Daksha’s sacrifice, cut off Daksha’s head, and replaced it with that of a goat as he restored him to life. The sorrow of losing wife Sati, Shiva pulled out up the remnants of Sati’s body and danced the dance of obligation through the universe. The other Gods intervened to stop him, and the Vishnu’s disk, or Sudarshana Chakra, cut through the corpse of Sati. The various parts of Sati’s body fell at several spots. And, they were scattered all over the Indian Subcontinent. Later, formed sites which are known as Shakti Peethas today.
“At Purnagiri Mandir the Naabhi (Naval) part of Sati fell and people come here to worship the Devi here.”
How to reach Purnagiri Devi Temple: It was not that tough for us to take a call on going to Purnagiri Temple by car from Rudrapur. We hired a cab, as that makes it more comfortable for us to enjoy the family time alongside. It took us 3 and half hours to cover a distance of 110 km to Purnagiri Temple.

The Walking experience to Purnagiri Temple: There are actually two ways to reach the Temple. One is through Stairs and other is the Slope. We preferred the stair and while walking down we took the slope way, as it made our walk easy and comfortable. It will not take you more than two hours to reach the temple, no matter whichever way you choose to reach.
“You can easily enjoy your walk of 3 km taking a halt whenever you want to as there are no.of Chai points.”
There are no.of sitting areas arranged by all the Dhaba’s.These are very helpful in case you are going to old age people and kids. There are immense Prasad Bhandar’s from the point where you start walking till the end where to reach to worship Maa Naina Devi.
We took two hours to cover the distance of 4 km. We stopped at different Chai points and snacks centres. It completely depends on how you like to make that walk happened.
We had an amazing time walking through the stairs as we enjoyed the Himalayas view and clicked too many pictures.
“After all, it’s all about making memories and cherishing the old days whenever you want to.”
